An itinerary that combines nature, rural heritage and sections of the Camino de Santiago, in one of the most surprising scenic balconies in the centre of Asturias.
The Cercanías del Cielo Route is one of those walks that, despite its modest altitude, offers truly impressive panoramic views thanks to its privileged location in the centre of Asturias. The route starts in La Vega, capital of the council of Sariego, next to the Chapel of Carmen, and begins a gentle ascent between fields surrounded by stone walls and stretches of native vegetation.
As you gain height towards Canal, the landscape opens up, offering views of the Sariego valley, with its characteristic mosaic of hills and scattered farmhouses. One of the most singular landmarks along the route is the Pozo de los Llobos, an old hunting trap traditionally used to trap wolves, a testimony to the ancestral livestock culture of the area.
After this point, the path continues to the Perriellos Viewpoint, in the recreational area of the same name, a perfect place to take a break and contemplate the Peñamayor and Sueve mountain ranges, and even, on clear days, the Picos de Europa on the horizon.
From the viewpoint, the path heads eastwards until it reaches the Cercanías del Cielo recreational area, which gives its name to the route. This modest but privileged spot offers one of the best views of the Sueve and is also a good spot for spotting birds of prey that frequently fly over this mid-mountain landscape.
Although the original route is linear and links the villages of La Vega and La Campa, in this proposal it has been adapted as a circular route, forgoing the last 500 metres of the official route to descend towards Figares. From there, it links up with a section of the Camino de Santiago, which crosses Pedrosa before returning to La Vega. This alternative allows you to enjoy a more varied and enriched return, following historic paths that still today form part of the pilgrims' route to Compostela.
The route, well signposted and with moderate gradients, offers a complete experience for those seeking a quiet walk, with cultural content and an open and serene landscape, typical of the council of Sariego, one of the most harmonious enclaves of rural Asturias.
- Partially coincides with PR-AS 197 and with the Camino de Santiago.
Basic tips before going into the mountains
- Avoid approaching livestock.
- If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
- If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
- Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
- Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
