A path that breathes silence, lichens and tradition, where the native forest embraces the walker and the Villanueva river accompanies him in its flow. Nature, heritage and pure air merge in this peaceful route through one of the greenest valleys in Asturias.

The Villanueva de Oscos Forest Route is a circular route of just over six kilometres that starts in the heart of the village, next to the Cistercian monastery and a slate granary that anticipates the rich heritage and ethnographic wealth of the council. Along the route, the walker enters fertile valleys, birch and oak woods, and paths flanked by hanging lichens that speak of clean, pure air.

The route starts in Vilanova/Villanueva de Oscos, the capital of the council, and runs parallel to the AS-33 road in the direction of Santa Eufemia. After passing several crossroads, we reach this small village, where there is a beautiful popular Baroque chapel, built between the 17th and 18th centuries. This first section combines road and tarmac, until we cross the Casteñeira bridge and turn right, at which point the surroundings become increasingly more natural and secluded.

At kilometre 2, the landscape transforms into a birch forest next to the abandoned farmhouse of Abilleira. As we advance, we come to a crossroads that could lead us to some enigmatically shaped stones, although the official route continues along the main path. From here, the path descends gently and crosses the bridge over the river Villanueva, in an area that combines meadows and riverside freshness.

At kilometre 4.3 we take a detour towards Pacios, a hamlet surrounded by woods. After a few metres, we enter the carballeira de Pacios, a beautiful oak grove that covers the valley with its majestic shade and becomes the highlight of the route. This oak grove is an excellent example of a well-preserved native forest, ideal for a leisurely walk and to let yourself be enveloped by nature.

After crossing the oak grove, the path descends again to Santa Eufemia, from where we return to the starting point in Villanueva de Oscos following the same path as on the way out, parallel to the AS-33 road.

The Villanueva de Oscos Forest Route is a serene and varied experience, perfect for discovering the biodiversity of the south-west of Asturias while crossing areas of great scenic and cultural value. It is ideal for a leisurely stroll, breathing fresh air and connecting with the forest tradition of one of the most beautiful and peaceful areas of Asturias.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
