The route crosses oak and pine forests, villages with popular architecture and offers views of the Salime reservoir. It ends at the Ethnographic Museum, an authentic reference point for the culture of south-western Asturias and a key point for understanding rural life in Asturias.

To walk this route around Grandas de Salime is to immerse yourself in the rural essence of western Asturias, where landscape, history and ethnography intertwine in a natural way. This simple and accessible route starts in the town of Grandas and runs through forest paths, small hamlets and wooded areas that offer ample views of the reservoir and the neighbouring mountain ranges.

The route begins next to the Ethnographic Museum of Grandas de Salime, an essential reference point for learning about Asturian peasant culture. From there, we take a path near the Ferreiro house and ascend towards Mount Coto. As we gain height, the landscape opens up between oak and pine woods, offering us an impressive view of the Salime reservoir, where the rivers Navia and Oro meet.

At the top of the mountain, the path heads towards the village of Robledo. Along the way, it is easy to find traces of the local fauna: wild boar snuffles, the trail of a roe deer, the sound of woodpeckers or the nests hidden among the trees. The surroundings convey a sense of rural stillness, reinforced by the traditional buildings that dot the landscape.

From Robledo, we continue along a small road until we turn off towards Escanlares, although we do not enter the village. Before this, we turn right to enter a small wood that leads us to A Farrapa (or La Farrapa), where the path briefly coincides with the AS-28 road. This section connects with a local cheese factory - Monteverde - an example of the vitality of the agri-food traditions of the south-west of Asturias.

The path then enters the forest once again. At kilometre 6 we return to a path that takes us, without any detours, to the village of Santa María. This rural village preserves several emblazoned houses from the 18th century, belonging to families such as the Ron, Magadán and Suárez families, testimony to a past linked to the small local nobility.

The route heads towards its end, taking a stretch of the AS-12 road. Shortly before kilometre 10, a fork in the road leads us to the right-hand branch, completing the circle after 700 metres of path that leads back to Grandas de Salime.

This walk is an invitation to discover the landscape of gentle hills and wooded slopes that surround the town, combining heritage, nature and rural life in an environment where time seems to move at a different pace. A perfect route for those looking for quiet walks with cultural and scenic content.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
