The route allows you to discover the traditional architecture and enjoy a quiet walk in the heart of rural Asturias.
The La Castañal Route begins in the village of Belmonte, next to the Aula Didáctica del Oro, from where you cross the bridge over the river Pigüeña to start the route along its right bank. For the first few kilometres, the path runs between ash, oak and chestnut trees, sharing the route with the GR 205, known as the Ruta de la Escrita or Ruta de los Vaqueiros de alzada.
At the second kilometre, the path separates from the GR 205 and begins an ascent towards the small rural village of Ondes, located at an altitude of 550 metres. In this village, the examples of traditional architecture, such as stone houses and haystacks, reflect the essence of the rural way of life. From Ondes, the route continues uphill to Samartín D'Ondes (750 m), where the parish church stands out, accompanied by an imposing century-old texu, a symbol of Asturian tradition and ancient spiritual protector of the community.
Before setting off on the return journey, it is advisable to visit the old washing place where there is a fountain where you can refresh yourself. From Samartín, the route descends along the same path, allowing you to rediscover the landscape from another perspective. The return journey offers new views of the valley and allows you to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere characteristic of this area of Belmonte/Balmonte.
This route, of low difficulty and suitable for all ages, combines nature, history and traditions, making it an excellent option for those looking for a relaxed walk in contact with the Asturian countryside.
- This route partially coincides with the GR-205.

Basic tips before going into the mountains
- Avoid approaching livestock.
- If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
- If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
- Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
- Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
