Ideal for hikers looking for a complete route, well signposted and full of culture, tradition and landscape, in the heart of the Picos de Europa.

The circular route of Monte Camba, between the towns of Tielve and Sotres, in the council of Cabrales, offers one of the most spectacular and complete routes to discover the essence of the livestock and landscape of the Picos de Europa.

This route, about 14 kilometres long and of medium difficulty, allows you to enjoy traditional sheepfolds, native forests and privileged views of the central massif, including the unmistakable silhouette of Picu Urriellu (Naranjo de Bulnes).

The route begins in Tielve, a village historically linked to the production of Cabrales cheese. From the vicinity of the church there is a mountain track that climbs steeply towards the grazing pastures. The initial, demanding section takes us to Colláu La Puerta in Valfríu (998 m), where the panoramic views open up completely towards the central massif of the Picos de Cabrales. The route continues through the Valfríu sheepfold and separates from the Senda de Caoro in a turn to the right to reach Tobaos, a mountain hut that offers one of the best views of Picu Urriellu and Peña Castil.

From here, the track passes through mid-mountain areas until it reaches a small stream in the vicinity of Campo de Cimbraña. It crosses the Cimbraña irrigation channel and advances through a more enclosed valley, flanked by hazelnut and centenary beech forests of Monte Camba, an area of high ecological value. The path flattens out and crosses Llanu El Fresnu, from where you reach the area around Cuetón de Arriba, an outstanding limestone formation. At this point is the El Carabu cave, now closed, where Cabrales cheese used to be matured.

The route crosses the road that joins Sotres and Tresviso, to continue along a track close to the tarmac that takes us directly to Sotres, the highest village in the Picos de Europa. From there, we continue in the direction of the village church, where we start the descent along the old Tielve path, also known as the Senda de Indias, a traditional route steeped in history.

The last stretch descends through a gorge parallel to the road, offering wide views over the surrounding valleys and peaks. After about 2 km of road, you return to the starting point in Tielve.

This route is perfect for those who want an authentic experience in the Picos de Europa, combining high mountain landscapes, livestock tradition and sections of little-travelled path, all in an accessible and well-structured circuit.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
