It starts at Collado La Cruz and combines pastures, sheepfolds and more demanding stretches. The effort is rewarded at a peak that acts as an authentic natural viewpoint. A demanding and panoramic route, ideal for mountain lovers.
The route to Pico Turbina starts at Collado La Cruz, located at kilometre 6.5 of the AS-345 road that connects the villages of Arangas and Rozagás. From this point, the route starts along an asphalted road that climbs steadily, crossing a landscape of meadows and pastures in the heart of the Sierra del Cuera.
In this first part of the route, the route continues along a wide track that leads to the Trebes hut, next to the Cotera Llendera. Just after the hut, take a path to the left that enters more mountainous terrain. The slope begins to increase considerably in a zigzagging section that saves almost 300 metres of height difference in barely one kilometre. This effort takes us to the Concha Gobiu porthole, an intermediate point in the ascent from where we can enjoy a panoramic view of the mountain range.
From Concha Gobiu, the path continues towards the Rozagás fold in a gentler section, ideal for regaining strength before tackling the last and most demanding stretch of the climb. Here, the landscape becomes rockier, and the path ascends between open slopes until it reaches the summit of Pico Turbina, the highest point of the Sierra del Cuera, at 1,315 metres.
The summit of Turbina is a privileged natural viewpoint, with 360-degree views: to the south, the massifs of the Picos de Europa; to the north, the Cantabrian coast and the blue sea; and on both sides, the valleys and villages of Peñamellera Alta, Cabrales and Llanes. It is a perfect place to stop, enjoy the scenery and feel the breadth of the horizon.
The return is along the same path, allowing you to rediscover the landscape in a new light and from a different perspective. The descent, although long, is comfortable and gradual, thus closing a route that combines effort, reward and a deep connection with the nature of the eastern Asturian mountains.
Basic tips before going into the mountains
- Avoid approaching livestock.
- If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
- If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
- Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
- Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
