The route starts in Mual, Exemplary Village of Asturias 2018, and climbs through the forest to the viewpoint of Montecín, with spectacular views of the valley and the Integral Natural Reserve of Muniellos. An ideal route to connect with nature.

The Moal Forest Route begins in the village of Mual, awarded the "Exemplary Village of Asturias" prize in 2018 for its commitment to the conservation of the environment. Located in the valley of the Muniellos River, at the gates of the Muniellos Integral Reserve, Mual stands out for its adaptation to the mountainous environment and its history linked to the sustainable use of the forest.

The path starts in the centre of the village, crossing the Muniellos river and taking a forest track that ascends gently among oak, beech and chestnut trees, emblematic species of the area. As you go on, the presence of "cortines" (stone constructions to protect beehives from bear attacks) reflects the traditional coexistence between humans and the local fauna.

At the first signposted junction, take the left turn-off, reserving the path on the right for the return. The slope gradually increases as the landscape densifies into a native forest where sessile oak, honey oak and beech dominate the surroundings. The route ascends until it reaches the Montecín viewpoint, from where you can admire the Mual valley, the village itself and the gates of the Muniellos Reserve.

The return path follows a gentle descent, going back into the forest mass before linking up again with the track that leads back to the starting point. This circular route, of low difficulty and marked by direct contact with nature, allows you to enjoy the rich biodiversity and forest history of the southwest of Asturias.

  • It runs through the Muniellos Biosphere Reserve, the Natural Park of Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias, and the SCI Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias of the Natura 2000 Network.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
