This route crosses a coastal area protected for its ecological, cultural and scenic value, as it partially passes through the Cabo Busto-Luanco SAC of the Natura 2000 Network. Along the way, visitors can enjoy viewpoints, open beaches, pine forests and historical remains that reflect the relationship between the sea and the local community.
The route begins at the San Juan de Nieva beach viewpoint, a high point from which you can see the wide sandy area and the mouth of the river Nalón. From here, the route continues towards the Pinar de Salinas pine forest, where the landscape changes, offering a cooler and shadier environment. This stretch is ideal for a quiet walk among pine trees that protect part of the dune system from wind and erosion.
Next, you reach El Espartal Beach, where the dune system unfolds in all its splendour. The primary and secondary dunes follow one after the other parallel to the sea, covered by species such as the barron or certain brooms that help to fix the sand, creating a unique habitat. The contrast between the dune vegetation and the coastline forms a landscape of great beauty and environmental interest.
At the western end of the beach stands La Peñona, a natural promontory where the Philippe Cousteau Anchor Museum is located. This open-air space pays homage to maritime culture through a collection of anchors and sculptures facing the sea. From the Mirador del Museo de las Anclas, there are spectacular views of the coastline, and a walkway provides access to the Mirador Playa de Salinas, completing a visual and symbolic ensemble of great value.
The route briefly retraces its steps to ascend through the Pinos Altos area, where the landscape opens up again, offering another perspective of the Espartal and the coastline. From the Salinas viewpoint, you can see the beaches of Salinas, San Juan de Nieva and the outline of La Peñona. Shortly after, you reach the recreational area of Pinos Altos, from where you descend gently to Arnao Beach.
In Arnao, those who wish can complete the route with a visit to the Arnao Mine Museum, where the first vertical coal shaft in Spain is preserved and where the mining history of this part of Asturias is explained. This low-difficulty route combines heritage, geography and nature, offering a complete experience along one of the most interesting coastal stretches of western Asturias.
- It runs partially through the Cabo Busto-Luanco SAC of the Natura 2000 Network.
- The route partially coincides with the GR-204.
Basic tips before going into the mountains
- Avoid approaching livestock.
- If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
- If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
- Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
- Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
