Through its historic centre and its estuary, this route shows how Avilés has managed to preserve its heritage while transforming itself into a city open to modernity and contemporary art.

The itinerary begins in the car park of the Palacio de Deportes, from where you enter the Carbayedo Park, a green space that houses the sculpture of El Tratante and a granary, symbols of the commercial and agricultural tradition of the area. The route continues to the Palace of La Balsera, current headquarters of the Municipal Conservatory of Music, an elegant mansion from the early 20th century that stands out for its ornamentation and historicist style tower.
From here we descend towards the historic centre of Avilés, making a stop at the Church of San Nicolás de Bari and the Fountain of Los Caños de San Francisco, both examples of the city's rich religious and civil heritage. The route continues towards La Grapa, from where you can access the estuary promenade. This section allows you to walk alongside the river and contemplate the urban transformation that this area has undergone.
We cross the estuary upstream for approximately two kilometres, and cross the estuary over a footbridge to return along the opposite bank in the direction of the Niemeyer Centre, an architectural complex designed by Oscar Niemeyer, which acts as an icon of contemporary Avilés and a focal point of local cultural life.
After visiting the Niemeyer Centre, the route crosses the estuary again and runs through the port area until it joins the Parque del Muelle, where there are several sculptures that enrich the urban environment. From here, take Carreño Miranda street until you reach the sculpture of La Monstrua. A detour to the right takes us to the Old Church of Sabugo. From here we head towards the Plaza de la Merced, where we find the Church of Santo Tomás de Canterbury, a building of great heritage relevance, and a few metres away the Conjunto Histórico de la Plaza del Mercado, emblematic enclaves of the old quarter.
The route concludes by crossing Las Meanas Park and returning to the starting point, thus completing a route that intertwines the past and present of Avilés in a dynamic environment full of contrasts.

  • The route crosses the Camino de Santiago in several places.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
