Along the way, the vegetation transforms progressively, from the initial orchards to dense mixed forests, while the horizon expands, revealing impressive panoramic views of several Asturian valleys.
The itinerary, which takes about three hours to cover both ways, begins in the village of Viḷḷar, which is accessed through the Cenera valley by the MI-4 road.
The route leaves Viḷḷar along a track that climbs slightly to the south and enters a wooded area. In this first part of the route you can see how the vegetation changes little by little: you leave behind the orchards that surround the village of Viḷḷar to enter a mixed forest where chestnut and oak trees predominate. As you gain height, birch and willow trees take over. Some small streams of water cross discreetly under the path and ash trees appear next to the huts and the perimeter fences of the farms, made of wood in the old style, which gives a traditional touch to the surroundings.
Approximately 2.2 kilometres from the start, the main track converges with another path. At this point, continue straight on along the main path, ignoring the detour. About 800 metres further on, reaching kilometre 3 of the route, turn left to continue without deviating. Continue in this direction for approximately another kilometre, at which point you should turn right.
After a few more metres, you finally reach the Alto del Cordal, which marks the end of this route. From here you can enjoy the beautiful views of the Mieres valley and in the distance Lena, Riosa and, of course, the imposing Aramo massif, and even, in the distance, the famous climb to the Angliru.
To get back to the starting point, you have to return along the same route.
Basic tips before going into the mountains
- Avoid approaching livestock.
- If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
- If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
- Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
- Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
