Situated in the Huerna Valley and surrounded by majestic mountains – some of which are among the highest in the Cantabrian Mountains – the route from Campumanes involves an ascent of almost 30 kilometres, of which 18 kilometres, from Los Pontones, feature steep gradients, though these only occasionally exceed a 10 per cent gradient.

Along the route lie the villages of Teyeo, Rospaso and Tuíza, set amidst woodland, mainly oak forests which begin to give way beyond the last of these villages to a high-mountain landscape, offering a breathtaking view of Las Ubiñas, until reaching the summit at an altitude of 1,683 metres.

Its considerable length, its winding route with a succession of hairpin bends, and the majestic landscape that transitions from oak forests to rugged rock as the altitude increases, give this route an alpine feel on a par with the great stages of the Tour de France, and it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cycle touring routes in central Asturias.

In winter, the road may be closed due to snow, so it is important to check conditions before starting the climb. Otherwise, access is not a problem for the rest of the year, and its good road surface, combined with the outstanding scenery, make it one of the most beautiful climbs you can undertake.
