With picturesque fishing villages such as Castropol and As Figueiras and an inland area full of forests, rivers and small charming villages, cycling is the ideal way to discover this enclave of contrasts at a leisurely pace, enjoying the sea breeze, the green landscape and the black slate, the main feature of the traditional architecture of the area.
Oscos-Eo has numerous options for lovers of cycle touring routes. The region is located in the westernmost part of Asturias, less than 2 hours by car from Oviedo/Uviéu.
Its orography is ideal for cycling, regardless of experience and level. Two demanding mountain routes run through the region from north to south. On the way, the Ethnographic Ensemble of Os Teixóis, with numerous hydraulic mills, its craftsmen's workshops and the Museum of Cutlery, in Taramundi; the Museum of the Marquis of Sargadelos' Birthplace and the Ethnographic Ensemble of Mazonovo in Santa Eulalia de Oscos, among others, are not to be missed.
Also of considerable difficulty is the route that connects the Eo estuary with the inland pastures and forests and runs through the councils of Vegadeo and Castropol.
Gravel and Mountain Bike in Oscos-Eo
Cycle touring enthusiasts will find in Oscos-Eo, alternatives of special routes for gravel bikes and for all levels: from more demanding itineraries such as the return to Oscos, with an accumulated gradient of 1200 metres but which, in exchange, offers the opportunity to visit some lesser-known villages and valleys in the region, to the Eo Greenway, ideal for enjoying the bike and the landscapes of San Tirso de Abres with the family, on a flat route that follows the old route of the train that transported iron across the border of Asturias and Galicia to the Bay of Biscay.
Another uncomplicated cycle touring route explores the north of Santa Eulalia de Oscos, along quiet roads and tracks, leading to photogenic villages with their slate roofs through green meadows and majestic forests.
For those who prefer mountain biking, the route to Bousoño, in San Martín de Oscos, starting from Pezós/Pesoz, in the Parque Histórico del Navia, is an exciting challenge that requires good technique and endurance. The route, which runs along forest tracks, offers spectacular views of the valleys and rivers of the region. In Bousoño it is worth stopping to visit its washing place and the hermitage of San Miguel.
The local gastronomy, rich in garden produce and meat, is another of the attractions of this route, with numerous fairs and festivals throughout the year where you can sample the most traditional dishes.
In short, Oscos-Eo is the ideal region for those who are looking for an authentic experience on two wheels, away from the noise and allowing contact with history and cultural heritage while enjoying a relaxing immersion in nature.
