We set off from the fishing village of Luarca/Ḷḷuarca, following the route along the Camín de Taurán towards El Canedo and Otur, where we join the N-634 road, which we follow until we take the turn-off for Puerto de Vega via the NV-2; after about 2 km, we turn off for about 400 m to reach the Barayo Partial Nature Reserve, where we can leave our bikes in the beach car park and walk to the viewpoint. At its mouth, the river forms an estuary of great natural value and outstanding scenic beauty.

We return to the NV-2 and continue towards Puerto de Vega, a fishing village with a beautiful fishing harbour, lined with traditional fishermen’s cottages, stately homes and the mansions of the ‘Indianos’ (emigrants who returned to Spain with wealth).

We continue along the NV-2 and, just before reaching Navia, take a turn-off to the right towards the Monolito viewpoint, from which there is a beautiful view of the Navia estuary. We carry on towards the fishing town of Navia, which boasts a rich heritage of monuments, ethnography and art, as well as a fishing harbour well worth a visit.

Once we’ve crossed the estuary, the route takes us towards Cape San Agustín, which offers spectacular views over the Cantabrian Sea. Here stands the San Agustín lighthouse and the chapel of the same name, originally dating from the 17th century.

We continue along local roads running very close to the coast, as well as along tracks that take us closer to the imposing cliff-lined landscape of the western Asturian coast. We’ll be able to take a break at spectacular viewpoints such as El Porto/Viavélez, Cabo Blanco, Porcía, Los Cañones, Peñarronda and Punta de la Cruz.

We’ll also pass through fishing villages such as El Porto/Viavélez and Tapia – one of the prettiest and most popular seaside towns in western Asturias – until we reach As Figueiras, a lovely village from which to admire the Eo Estuary Nature Reserve. From As Figueiras, we’ll continue on to Castropol, skirting an inlet of the estuary that offers stunning scenery. Our route ends in this charming village.

Please observe the direction of traffic on urban stretches of road.

Take care when travelling to the beaches in summer.
