The trail begins at the Tuñón recreation area, next to the Bear Monument, where, after crossing the bridge over the River Trubia, it joins the trail coming from Trubia. This section is around 7.5 km long and well-maintained, so it is also perfectly possible to start the walk in Trubia.
Along the route, we’ll pass through villages of undeniable charm such as Villanueva, with its beautiful medieval bridge, or Proaza with its iconic tower (this requires leaving the path and rejoining it later), we can visit the bear enclosures and head to the Bear Viewpoint, and pass through gorges such as Peñas Juntas, with the beauty of the Proaza Valley always framing the route. Between these two villages lies the Buyera recreation area, featuring a car park, table tennis tables and picnic tables for al fresco dining.
The route crosses the river several times and, upon reaching the Peñas Juntas gorge, the section becomes ‘aerial’, with a path suspended above the river which we traverse via various tunnels and cuttings carved into the rock. It is undoubtedly an impressive and enjoyable section.
The section ends just before Caranga Baxu, at the junction between the two branches that make up La Senda del Oso: the one leading to Entragu towards Teverga, and the one heading for the Valdemurio Reservoir in Quirós. Here, we have the option of returning to the start or continuing along one of the two routes mentioned.
This section of the Senda del Oso can be tackled on its own, but bear in mind that there is no public transport for the return journey, so you will need to either walk back the same way or contact one of the active tourism companies operating in the area.
It can be reached from Trubia, and you can follow the 7.5 km of local roads and tracks to Tuñón.
It can be done in stages.
You should plan your return journey.
