This stage consists of several sections that differ significantly in terms of road surface and route alignment.
The first of these starts in Trubia, from where we’ll set off, keeping the River Trubia on our right as we walk. For almost 5 km, the route follows local roads to the small village of San Andrés. From this point, we’ll continue along a well-maintained gravel track for about 2.5 km, which takes us to the start of the Senda del Oso proper, at the Tuñón recreation area.
The Senda del Oso follows the route of the old mining railways that used to transport ore from Entragu in Teverga and Santa Marina in Quirós to Trubia. Running parallel to the River Trubia, criss-crossed by tunnels and bridges, the route offers breathtaking scenery and blends perfectly with the surroundings of the Proaza Valley.
Along the route, we’ll pass through undeniably charming villages such as Villanueva, with its beautiful medieval bridge, and Proaza, with its iconic tower (this requires leaving the trail and rejoining it later); we can visit the bear enclosures, head to the Oso viewpoint and pass through gorges such as Peñas Juntas.
The route ends in the little village of Caranga Baxu, shortly after passing the junction between the two branches that make up the Senda del Oso: the one heading towards Teverga, to the Prehistory Park, and the one heading towards Bárzana in Quirós.
This section can be tackled independently, but bear in mind that there is no public transport for the return journey, so you will need to either retrace your steps or contact one of the active tourism companies operating in the area.
