We set off from Mieres railway station and follow the route through the town centre until we reach the AS-375 road towards Llangréu/Langreo. After passing San Xuan Church and Requexu Square, we take the Greenway on the right-hand side, which we’ll follow right to the end.

Along the route, with the river always nearby and surrounded by mountains and valleys, we’ll come across extensive areas of scrubland and woodland. At the heads of the valleys, plant species such as beech forests, heathland, heather moors and hay meadows appear, constituting the area’s most characteristic vegetation. In terms of wildlife, birds of prey such as the goshawk and the golden eagle, and mammals such as the otter and the common pipistrelle bat, are particularly noteworthy.

The route is dotted with mine shafts and mining infrastructure, reminding us of the mining basin’s former glory.

Although the Greenway ends at Returbiu, where you’ll find the Monument to the Bicycle, we recommend continuing along the track to El Quentu los Ríos, passing through a very pleasant wooded area.

The return journey follows the same route. It’s certainly a great outing for the whole family, even with children.
