We set off from Rusecu/Rioseco, in the heart of the Redes Biosphere Reserve, along the AS-117 road, skirting the Tanes reservoir; at the far end of the reservoir, we take the AS-254 road towards Tañes, following the Orlé river valley. In Tañes, we can stop to visit the Collegiate Church of Santa María La Real. The Beekeeping Museum is also well worth a visit.

We then begin the climb to the Arnicio Pass (908 m), which we reach after an ascent of around 8 km. With its meadows, the Arnicio Pass is a must-see stop, offering fine views in all directions. You can see Cerro Facéu, whilst Xamoca and Busllar, amongst others, also stand out. After a refreshing stop, we continue on our way to L’Infiestu, which we’ll reach after a descent of around 22 km following the valley of the River La Marea.

We cross L’Infiestu via Avenida de Orrín and continue along local roads following the suggested route, although at times we’ll veer off these onto tracks that add to the enjoyment of the journey. At times we ride parallel to the Piloña river valley and, at others, we pass through some charming villages, such as Valle, until we reach Villamayor, where we can stop to visit the church of Santa María, designated a BIC (Asset of Cultural Interest).

The route continues through meadows and livestock-farming villages along roads and tracks in good condition. We’ll pass through small villages such as Sebares, Llames, and Parres – where we can stop to see the chapel of San Martín de Escoto – and Vega de los Caseros, until we enter the wide valley of the iconic River Sella, which will take us to Cangues d’Onís/Cangas de Onís, the end of the route. Here you can admire one of Asturias’ most photographed landmarks, the ‘Roman Bridge’ with its hanging Cross of Victory, a symbol of the lively capital of Cangas.

Please observe the direction of traffic on urban stretches of road.

The road is in a rather poor condition.
