On the descent, the route crosses the Lobos well, an old trap built more than four centuries ago to protect livestock, before returning via the viewpoint of the Senda Mina la Esperanza.
The Llosorio Peak Route begins in La Foz de Morcín, from where we start the ascent towards the Mina Esperanza recreational area, a quiet place where we can replenish our water supply at the Fuente La Esperanza fountain or contemplate a small waterfall at the bottom of the fountain.
From here, the route continues towards Collado El Plano, passing near old mining structures, such as a mining tunnel that we can turn off to in less than 100 metres. Once at the pass, we turn right to tackle the first peak of the route: Pico Caneo (939 m).
The path continues with a constant up and down, offering a sensation of spaciousness and freedom, with the horizon stretching out towards the more distant peaks. Shortly afterwards, we reach Pico La Vara (954 m), which we leave behind to head towards the objective of the route: the summit of Pico Llosorio (998 m).
From the summit of Pico Llosorio, the views are spectacular. On clear days, it is possible to contemplate a 360-degree panoramic view, stretching from the Picos de Europa to the Cantabrian Sea. This is an excellent place to stop, rest and take photographs of the stunning Asturian landscape.
The descent follows a well-marked path that gently descends to the Lobos well, an ancient wolf trap, built more than four centuries ago by the locals on the western slope of Llosorio (Lisoriu), as an ingenious resource to protect their livestock from predators. Surrounded by vegetation and accompanied by the sound of the nearby water, this enclave conveys serenity and mystery, and is a testimony to the ingenuity of the people in the fight against predators.
From the well of Lobos, the route continues towards the Campa La Velonga, where we can see some traditional constructions before embarking on a gentle descent back to La Foz de Morcín. Before concluding the route, we pass the Senda Mina la Esperanza viewpoint, from where we can enjoy spectacular views that are well worth a last stop before returning to the starting point.
The combination of panoramic peaks, mining remains and traditional landscapes makes the route to Pico Llosorio an unforgettable experience for lovers of hiking and nature in Asturias.
- A demanding route in terms of route and gradient, but not in terms of technical difficulty.
Basic tips before going into the mountains
- Avoid approaching livestock.
- If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
- If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
- Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
- Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
