The route begins in the town of Villaviciosa, which has a very well-preserved historic centre, with the late Romanesque church of Santa María de la Oliva, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
We leave La Villa towards San Juan de Amandi on the AS-256a road, to see the beautiful Romanesque church, and continue towards Ambás, to visit the Monumental Complex of Valdediós, made up of the Church of San Salvador de Valdediós, a landmark of Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture, and the Cistercian Monastery of Santa María la Real de Valdediós.
We continue along the road to Pueyes and following the track we return to Villaviciosa. We leave La Villa along the AS-256, and head towards Puntal Beach along the left bank of the Villaviciosa Estuary, a Nature Reserve of great ecological value due to its biodiversity and ornithological interest. On this route there is a rest area offering spectacular views of the estuary.
Optionally, we can visit the town of Tazones, a fishing village where Charles V disembarked and famous among other things for its small port, where the emperor's disembarkation is recreated in August (declared a festival of tourist interest). At low tide, dinosaur footprints can be seen on the coast, and the area of the lighthouse, one of the best preserved on the Asturian coast, is also interesting.
We continue cycling along the VV-5 between villages and meadows, approaching Gijón/Xixón, to the La Providencia viewpoint, from where we can contemplate the bay of Gijón/Xixón and enjoy an unbeatable landscape. This city, open to the sea, has a very flat topography and has a large number of cycle lanes that facilitate mobility. You should at least visit the old fishing quarter of Cimavilla, the hill of Santa Catalina with its sculpture by Chillida, the Palace of Revillagigedo, or the modernist buildings.
Respect the direction of traffic on urban stretches.
Caution with the traffic towards the beaches in summer.
