We began the route next to the church of Santa María de La Oliva, a magnificent example of late Romanesque architecture, but not before strolling through the streets of Villaviciosa’s beautiful historic centre, which is very well preserved.
We continue on to Amandi, where we will visit the church of San Juan, which dates back to the pre-Romanesque period but stylistically belongs to the Romanesque phase of the Asturian Baroque, with Gothic elements.
We then head towards Camoca, where, after a short detour, we can admire another example of late Romanesque architecture at the Church of San Juan de Camoca. We continue through the beautiful Boiges Valley, which the Cistercian monks named Valdediós, where the small but majestic church of San Salvador stands, a true gem of Asturian Pre-Romanesque art. Just a few metres away stands the Monastery of Santa María de Valdediós, founded in 1200 by King Alfonso IX of León and Queen Berenguela of Castile. This monumental complex is certainly well worth a stop and a more detailed visit.
We change valleys by following the AS-380 road until it meets the AS-333, and continue towards Valdebárcena, passing almost right next to the church of San Andrés – a humble building but one of great ornamental beauty – before reaching the cross at La Collada and beginning a gentle descent through meadows to Nava.
Nava is a leading centre for natural cider and is home to the Cider Museum, offering a wonderful opportunity to learn in detail about one of Asturias’s most distinctive hallmarks.
