We set off from the marina in Gijón/Xixón, making use of its network of cycle paths until we join the La Camocha greenway, which we’ll leave behind to reach La Pedrera. We continue along the Camino de Los Campones until we join the AS-381 road and carry on along the Camino de Pinzales until we reach the parish of Ruedes.
Once past La Aguda, we’ll take the local road that climbs up steep gradients to Peñaferruz, where the Picu Alba stands out; this is the site where Curiel Castle stood in the early Middle Ages. We’ll carry on until we reach the junction with the AS-361 near La Venta del Jamón.
Once in Pravia, we continue along the AS-374, which will take us to La Estación/Lugo de Llanera, and then brings us close to the foothills of Monte Naranco, as we make our way towards Oviedo/Uviéu along a series of local tracks and roads that run parallel to the mountain’s foothills.
At one point, near Villamaxil, you can choose to take the turn-off towards the ‘Finnish trail’, which takes you to the pre-Romanesque monuments of San Miguel de Lillo and Santa María del Naranco (3.2 km one way). From this point, we enter the urban area of the city, cycling through streets that lead us towards the historic centre and ending up near the Cathedral Square.
Both Gijón/Xixón and Oviedo/Uviéu boast historic centres and areas of architectural interest that make this route more than just a simple link and give the journey its own meaning. The option of taking the train back encourages you to explore them at a leisurely pace, savouring all the riches they have to offer.
