The route leaves Gijón/Xixón along the old road to Avilés, crossing the port and industrial area to the west. At Avda. del Lauredal we take the road to Rubín and follow the track along the creeks until we reach the Campa Torres Archaeological-Natural Park, 7 km from the centre of Gijón/Xixón, a visit which, although it lengthens the route, is well worth it. We go back about 3 km the way we came and resume our route.
We follow the track down a steep slope and cross the Aboño coal park. We continue towards Xivares Beach, and take the CE-4 road, paying attention to the track, to follow a series of local roads and tracks that will take us to the Perlora halt, and from there we join the AS-388 road to reach Candás, a charming fishing village where we can visit the port, the promenade and the fishing quay. The original route of the route included the Tanqueru Greenway, but it is currently closed due to rock falls.
The route continues along the AS-388 road to Ensenada de Antromero, and then takes secondary roads, with the Cantabrian Sea in sight along the way, to the fishing village of Lluanco/Luanco. The historic quarter is worth a stop there, where the church of Santa María (a Historic-Artistic Monument) and the Casa de los Menéndez de la Pola (a Site of Cultural Interest), among others, are of particular interest.
We follow the route, following the tracks and paths indicated on the track, to Cabo Peñas. From here you can observe the beauty of this Protected Landscape: cliffs, islets and beaches of great scenic and ecological value. In this area there are more than 15 species of seabirds. It is estimated that during the autumn migration the migratory flow exceeds one million birds.
We leave Cape Peñas behind us and continue along local roads, passing through beautiful spots such as Verdicio beach and Xagó Cove. From here, we go towards the bottom of the Avilés estuary, crossing an industrial area until we reach the Niemeyer Centre, a cultural reference and an unmistakable building due to its unique architecture.
We cross the estuary and walk along its banks until we reach the historic centre of Avilés, the end of the route, which we will reach by turning left after passing the Parque del Muelle. The historic centre of Avilés is very well preserved, and will pleasantly surprise the visitor who is not familiar with it.
Respect the direction of traffic on urban stretches.
Caution with the traffic towards the beaches in summer.
