Info
The Port of Avilés is a space where history and modernity merge. An estuary where the industrial landscape and the natural surroundings go hand in hand, creating a unique setting. It is also an important driving force for the development of the companies located on its banks and a faithful reflection of the historical evolution of this process.
From its origins as a salt and fishing port in medieval times, through the prominence of coal, steel and bulk cargo, to the present day with sectors such as the wind industry or zinc, the Port of Avilés has been able to adapt to the changes of each era.
An old shipyard, now converted into the Avilés Port Interpretation Centre, allows visitors to discover this fascinating history. A space aimed at both locals and visitors who wish to learn about the evolution and importance of the port over time.
To complete the visit, there are two daily didactic itineraries on foot, lasting one hour, along the promenade on the right bank of the estuary, between San Juan de Nieva and the Peña del Caballo.
The Interpretation Centre of the Submarine Canyons of Avilés is a unique space that, through the artistic representation of scientific contents, aims to highlight one of the most exceptional and, at the same time, most unknown enclaves of the Cantabrian coast: the Great Sima of Avilés.
To this end, visitors are offered a unique recreation of these underwater canyons, which stand out for their innovative creative, communicative and technological characteristics, as well as for their high degree of immersion. The centre uses the most advanced interactive image techniques, such as augmented and virtual reality, holograms and 3D models, offering an informative and sensorial experience of great impact.
