We set off from Muros de Nalón, heading for the AS-368 road which will take us to Pravia. After crossing the motorway, we arrive at Somáu, named ‘Exemplary Village of Asturias’ in 2020 and home to some of the finest examples of ‘Indiana’ architecture in the Principality, which, with their colour and exotic charm, encourage you to ‘wander the streets’ a little before continuing.

We continue along the route and, after about 9.5 km, near Bances, we can take a detour towards Santianes to visit the Pre-Romanesque Basilica of San Juan de Santianes (1.2 km one way), the oldest in Asturias, built in the year 780 at the behest of King Silo of Asturias, at the time when the kingdom’s capital was moved to Pravia.

We reach Pravia and pass through its historic centre, which is well worth a visit, particularly the Collegiate Church of Santa María La Mayor.

We continue along the AS-347 road to reach the banks of the River Narcea, which we cross to join the AS-39. We’ll pass by the church of San Tirso de Candamo, built on the site of an ancient Romanesque monastery, and carry on along the AS-38 and AS-312 to reach Grau/Grado.

Grau/Grado marks the end of this connecting stage and boasts a historic quarter designated as a Site of Cultural Interest, which is certainly well worth exploring. Particularly worth noting is the traditional market in this town in the Moscona region, held every Wednesday and Sunday, which is one of the most traditional and important in the whole of the Principality. It is undoubtedly the market of Asturias.
