Los Azules Cave
- Title Cangas de Onís Eastern Asturias
Info
The cave of Los Azules is located in the district of Contraquil, in Cangues d' Onís/Cangas de Onís.
It was discovered in 1972 and archaeological excavations began the following year. It contains fertile Magdalenian levels, but if it is really well known, it is for its epipalaeolithic records, corresponding to the Azilian culture (10th and 8th millennia BC) of which it has become the type site for the whole of the Cantabrian area.
Among its bone industry, the typical Azilian harpoons stand out. The appearance in the cave of a burial corresponding to the last moments of the Azilian occupation is proof of the existence of a certain funerary ritual.
The recreation of the Los Azules burial site can be visited at the Archaeological Museum of Asturias (Oviedo/Uviéu).
The cave is located in the neighbourhood of Contranquil, Cangues d' Onís/Cangas de Onís, within a private estate.
