Info
Built in the 10th century and partially rebuilt in the 19th century, this pre-Romanesque church has a basilica floor plan; it is divided into three naves and has a tripartite chevet.
At the foot of the nave, two compartments of the original portico remain, which are accessed through two brick arched doorways.
The interior is covered with wood, except for the side chapels of the chancel, which are covered with a barrel vault.
The naves are separated by small semi-circular brick arches resting on square pillars. In the chancel area, the columns are decorated with capitals with Asturian motifs: sogueados and acanthus leaves.
The mullioned window on the south wall, on which the date of rebuilding is inscribed, several capitals and the remains of another window date from the pre-Romanesque period.
In the 19th century, the church was rebuilt, resulting in the main chapel, the sacristy on the south wall, the belfry and the portico that surrounds the western and southern façades.
The church of Santiago de Gobiendes was restored between 1985 and 1987 by the Government of the Principality of Asturias.
