Info
With the creation of the Casa de la Apicultura, Bual Town Council aims to: provide advisory and training services to beekeepers, as well as to establish a museum collection on the theme of beekeeping, with a view to promoting the ancient art of beekeeping whilst preserving all items related to traditional beekeeping. The Beekeeping Centre features an audiovisual room, a specialist library and a permanent exhibition, which is one of its main attractions.
This beekeeping exhibition traces the evolution of the various techniques used in the area over the last century. It is illustrated by panels from the book *Bees, Honey and Wax in Traditional Society* by Xuaco López Álvarez.
It also houses around a hundred antique and modern items related to beekeeping. The visit invites us to reflect on the self-sufficiency of the Asturian hamlet, the role played by honey and beeswax, how they were extracted, where and how the hives were placed..., the evolution and transition to modern beekeeping, the organisation of the colony, new extraction techniques, hive products and their current uses.
The tour concludes with a screening of a documentary film on honey and beeswax.
