Info
It was built between 1886 and 1905 in what was then the suburb of Ferreros. Inaugurated in 1907, the building corresponds to the so-called panopticon model (a type of penitentiary establishment typical of the 19th century) with a rotunda or polygonal central body used for surveillance, from which a radial structure emerges that outlines a five-pointed star in which the galleries were located. The complex has three storeys and the central body is enclosed by a decagonal tower topped by a dome with a lantern.
The entire complex is surrounded by a wall, with a sentry walk and circular, crenellated sentry boxes at the corners. Outside the wall, the administration pavilion was built.
This institution is an archive service where researchers and users search for and consult documents for their work and studies, or for other information requirements. It has a consultation room with a capacity for about fifty people.
Guided tours are organised for groups as an initiative to disseminate the valuable Asturian documentary heritage. These visits, aimed especially at groups linked to the functions of the archive, such as university students of the Humanities, archivists and information professionals, as well as students of secondary education in the field of literature and various cultural groups, take place twice a month and usually have a size ranging between twenty and fifty people.
It is essential to emphasise that, due to the nature of the Archive, these visits must be guided by the Centre's staff. This is because they take place largely within the document repositories and internal facilities, offering visitors a more complete and enriching experience.
Free parking is available on the premises.
