Info
The building of the Old Prison of Oviedo/Uviéu is located in Ciudad Naranco. It can be identified by its dome, the top of the centre of the "star" formed by its galleries.
It was built between 1886 and 1905 in what was then the suburb of Ferreros. Inaugurated in 1907, the building corresponds to the so-called panopticon model (a type of penitentiary establishment typical of the 19th century) with a rotunda or polygonal central body used for surveillance, from which a radial structure emerges that outlines a five-pointed star in which the galleries were located. The complex has three storeys and the central body is enclosed by a decagonal tower topped by a dome with a lantern.
The entire complex is surrounded by a wall, with a sentry walk and circular, crenellated sentry boxes at the corners. The administration pavilion was built outside the wall.
