Bustiello Mining Settlement Interpretation Centre

The town centre of Bustiello embodies the business and social philosophy of the Sociedad Hullera Española, a powerful company owned by the Marquis of Comillas, drawing on French urban and architectural inspiration, yet imbued with a deeply Catholic and Spanish character.

The company, situated in a remote mining area characterised by narrow valleys, would come to monopolise local power and territorial organisation. In line with this model, the company took great care of the production area and implemented a paternalistic social policy through which it oversaw the workers’ lives beyond the workplace: housing, supplies, education, healthcare, leisure and culture. All of this can still be seen on the ground, hence its heritage value, which led to its designation as a Site of Cultural Interest (2017).

Bustiello is the finest example of all this, and the Interpretation Centre (located in the engineer’s former residence) is key to understanding it. The only option is a guided tour, which includes not only the centre itself but also a visit to its magnificent chapel and highlights of the exterior.
