Museum of Wood (MUMA)

Essential for getting around the muddy roads of the region, the madreña, although as Asturian as cider, was not only used in these lands. Many regions of northern Spain and Europe have resorted to this practical and indispensable solution in humid and rainy climates. Examples of all these places are represented in this unique museum.

But the Museo de la Madera de Caso is much more.

Since ancient times, wood has played a fundamental role in the life of the inhabitants of this Asturian council. Its abundance meant that the work of this material reached great quality here and the craftsmen of Caso achieved a well-deserved fame, especially the "madreñeros" (woodworkers).

Wood was the material used to make farm implements, carts and other means of transport, baskets and musical instruments.

Its use was especially important in the peasant house, where it was not only the main material for its construction, but also for all the furniture and household furnishings. It was also essential for the auxiliary constructions of the farmhouse, such as barns and stables, and was especially important in the construction that dominates the Asturian rural landscape, the hórreo, built entirely of wood, except for the roof tiles, the access staircase and, except for the oldest ones, the supports.

All these objects and constructions can be seen in the Wood Museum, whose visit will take us into the Asturian rural world and its traditional way of life.

As a complement to the visit to the interior of the Museum, a stroll through the village of Veneros is particularly recommended. From the closest thing to the museum, with the chapel that formed part of the palace, to the last corner, passing by magnificent examples of hórreos (raised granaries). Some of them are among the oldest in Asturias, dating back to the 16th century.
