The Santiuste Blowhole
Llanes (Eastern Asturias)
  • The Santiuste Blowhole is on the eastern coastline of the borough of Llanes, close to La Franca Beach.

One of the most beautiful natural phenomena, declared a Natural Monument.

In stormy weather, when a wave crashes hard into the hole created in the karst rock, the water rises up under pressure and forms a type of geyser, blasting out sand, organic debris and even rocks of considerable size, in addition to water, producing a whistling sound or roar (bufido) that gives name to this phenomenon (bufón).

The Santiuste Blowhole is considered the largest of the blowholes on the eastern coastline, as it can eject a jet of up to 40 metres in height.
