Free, guided nature tours in Asturias

Can you imagine exploring the Villaviciosa Estuary accompanied by an expert guide who’ll help you identify the birds that inhabit one of northern Spain’s most valuable wetlands? Or peering out from the Muniellos viewing points, walking through the Redes riverside forest or gazing at the impressive cliffs of Cabo Peñas whilst discovering all the secrets of these protected areas?

This year you can do all this completely free of charge thanks to the programme of activities organised by the Asturias Nature Network, a comprehensive programme designed to help you discover some of the Principality’s most spectacular landscapes in a different, accessible and environmentally respectful way.

Whether with family, friends or on your own, you’ll find opportunities to go birdwatching, explore centuries-old forests, discover cliffs, learn about the flora and fauna of our natural parks, or play an active part in conserving our natural heritage. Below, we’ll tell you all about what you can do.

Guided tours are a wonderful way to get closer to nature. They offer a truly enriching and exciting experience, providing unforgettable moments.

If you’ve always wanted to give birdwatching a go, this is one of the best opportunities. Accompanied by a specialist guide, you’ll explore the area around the Ría de Villaviciosa Partial Nature Reserve, one of the most important wetlands in northern Spain, learning to identify the different species that find a perfect place here to feed and rest during their migrations. A perfect experience for discovering the natural wealth of this protected area from a new perspective.

Venue: Ría de Villaviciosa Interpretation Centre (El Puntal)
When: Saturdays and Sundays, from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm.
 

Discover Asturias’ only Strict Nature Reserve from some of its finest natural vantage points. This guided tour of the Obacho Viewpoints offers an insight into the history, biodiversity and environmental values of Muniellos, whilst you enjoy spectacular panoramic views over one of Europe’s best-preserved forests. An unmissable experience for anyone wishing to explore this protected area without venturing into the reserve itself.

When: Saturdays and Sundays, from 4.30 pm to 6.00 pm.
 

The Bear Trail is one of the best-known routes in Asturias, and this activity offers the chance to walk along one of its sections accompanied by a guide who will introduce visitors to the history, geology and biodiversity of the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve. An easy walk, suitable for all ages and perfect for enjoying with the family.

Location: Teverga Information Point.
When: Saturdays and Sundays, from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm.
 

Explore one of Asturias’ most spectacular coastal landscapes along a circular route that combines nature, geology and unforgettable views of the Cantabrian Sea. Along the way, you’ll discover the richness of the Cabo Peñas Protected Landscape and understand why this spot is one of the great symbols of the Asturian coastline.

Venue: Cabo Peñas Protected Landscape Interpretation Centre.
When: Saturdays and Sundays, from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm.
 

Forests, mountains and tranquil waters make up one of the most stunning landscapes in the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park. This route takes you around the reservoir whilst you discover its extraordinary biodiversity, particularly its rich birdlife, always accompanied by experts who help you interpret every detail of the landscape. An ideal way to enjoy nature at a leisurely pace.

Location: Valdemurio Information Point.
When: Saturdays and Sundays, from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm and from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm.
 

Explore the Picos de Europa National Park on a guided tour that takes you to some of its main interpretative attractions. The tour includes the shepherds’ hut, the arboretum and the model of the area and, at certain times, also the Mirador del Príncipe viewpoint, which offers some of the best panoramic views of the mountain range. An accessible walk to help you better understand this unique natural area.

Location: Pedro Pidal Visitor Centre.
When: Weekends in July.
 

The Interpretation Centres of the Asturias Nature Network also host interesting exhibitions that offer an in-depth look at the biodiversity, wildlife and landscapes of Asturias.

Discover a spectacular large-scale model of the village of Valle de Lago, where every detail comes to life. Mountains, lakes, mills, thatched-roof huts, stone houses and even wild animals faithfully recreate one of Somiedo’s most iconic spots, offering an original and educational way to explore this unique landscape.

An ideal activity for the whole family and a different way to understand the environment and the essence of the Somiedo Natural Park.

The photographic exhibition *Pulso: Heartbeats of Iberian Wildlife*, by Oihane García and Daniel Vidal, invites visitors to delve into the world of wildlife through a collection of images that capture the strength, beauty and fragility of Iberian wildlife.

Each photograph captures unique moments in which nature is shown in its purest form, offering visitors a visual journey that stirs the emotions and connects them with the extraordinary natural heritage of our protected areas.

Venue: Somiedo Natural Park Interpretation Centre (Pola de Somiedo).
When: Every day the centre is open.
 

Asturian nature takes centre stage in this travelling exhibition organised by the Association of Nature Photographers of Asturias (AFONAS). Through a carefully curated selection of images, the exhibition invites visitors to discover the extraordinary diversity of landscapes, fauna and flora that make Asturias such a unique region.

Each photograph captures the essence of our natural spaces, bringing visitors face-to-face with scenes of great beauty and unique moments in wildlife, the result of the patience and hard work of some of the region’s finest nature photographers.

An opportunity to view Asturias through an artistic lens and discover the natural riches hidden in every corner of the region.

Venue: Cerredo Interpretation Centre.
 

Behind many of the major advances in our understanding of the oceans are women whose stories deserve to be told. The exhibition ‘Oceánicas: Pioneers of Oceanography’ pays tribute to twenty female scientists who dedicated their lives to exploring, researching and understanding the marine environment.
Through an informative and engaging exhibition, the display highlights their discoveries, their legacy and their contribution to science, whilst inspiring new generations and fostering an interest in ocean research and conservation.

An exhibition that invites you to see the sea in a new light and to discover the women who helped to unravel many of its secrets.

Venue: Cabo Peñas Protected Landscape Interpretation Centre.
When: From 14 July to 15 September.
