88th Canoe Festival – International Sella River Descent

88th Canoe Festival – International Sella River Descent
Event designated as a Festival of International Tourist Interest

The International Sella River Descent will hold its 88th edition on Saturday 8 August 2026. Regarded as one of Asturias’ most iconic sporting and festive events, it brings together hundreds of canoeists from different countries every summer, as well as thousands of spectators who follow the race from the banks of the River Sella.

The race starts at the Arriondas bridge and finishes in Ribadesella, after covering nearly 20 kilometres along the River Sella. The spectacular atmosphere surrounding the event turns the day into a huge celebration, with music, tradition and activities both in Arriondas and in Ribadesella.

Although the official programme for the 2026 edition will be announced shortly, the day will begin, as is tradition, with the starting ceremony at the Arriondas bridge. Before the start of the competition, the anthem of Asturias will be played and the traditional opening address in verse will take place, which this year will be delivered by the Asturian footballer Santi Cazorla. Next, the characteristic cannon shot will mark the start of one of the world’s most iconic canoeing events.

One of the most popular ways to enjoy the Descent is aboard the River Train, a special service that runs parallel to the River Sella and allows spectators to follow the race from various points along the route. Due to high demand, it is advisable to purchase tickets in advance as soon as they go on sale.

The official programme for the Fiesta de las Piraguas will be updated on this page as soon as the organisers confirm the timetables and activities for the 2026 edition.
