Info
The University of Oviedo’s Museum of Geology is a leading centre for the dissemination of Earth Sciences in Asturias. Located in the Faculty of Geology on the Llamaquique Campus, it houses one of the most important geological collections in northern Spain, comprising over 40,000 items including minerals, fossils, rocks, gemstones, meteorites and scientific instruments.
Its permanent exhibition showcases around a thousand specimens organised into 41 educational displays, enabling visitors to explore the geological evolution of the Earth, the richness of Asturias’ natural heritage, and the processes that have shaped landscapes and natural resources over millions of years. Highlights of its collection include Asturian fluorites, fossils from all geological periods and fragments of the Cangas de Onís meteorite, the exhibition’s flagship exhibit. The museum also features a fluorescence room where phenomena related to light and other
radiation are presented.
The museum combines scientific rigour with a commitment to public outreach, offering guided tours for groups on request. In addition to its cultural role, it provides significant support for university teaching and geological research.
As the successor to the University of Oviedo’s former Natural History Cabinet, its origins date back to the 19th century, giving it considerable historical and heritage value. Today, it is a space that invites visitors to understand the history of our planet and to appreciate the geological richness of Asturias in an accessible and engaging way.
