It is an area of special environmental protection, and belongs to the Regional Network of Protected Natural Spaces of the Principality of Asturias, under the figure of Natural Monument. The purpose of this declaration is the conservation of this unique geological system and the natural elements associated with it.
It is a gorge produced by the Arlós River, and is located between the Castiello and Álvaro peaks on one side, and the Alto de Grandellana on the other.
In the Escañorio there are different types of vegetation of great interest such as the Galician-Cantabrian alder, the ash tree, the carballo, the colchoneros fern (a protected species in Asturias) and poisonous species such as the foxglove and the green hellebore. It is also a habitat rich in animal species thanks to its aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
