This activity offers the chance to discover the birds and wildlife of some of Asturias’ most notable protected areas, such as the Picos de Europa, the Ponga Natural Park and the Villaviciosa Estuary Partial Nature Reserve.
Info
The activity is designed to showcase the wildlife and natural environment of Asturias. Trips are organised to the best spots for birdwatching and observing nature. All necessary equipment, such as telescopes, binoculars and identification guides, is provided. Third-party liability and accident insurance are also included.
There are four activities in the eastern part of Asturias:
- The Lakes of Covadonga. These are situated within the Picos de Europa National Park. On a tour in the company’s vehicles, you can enjoy observing and learning about the wildlife in this protected area, as well as the way of life of the shepherds who produce the famous Gamonéu cheese and their relationship with the many species of birds found there, such as bearded vultures, golden eagles, Egyptian vultures and griffon vultures. - ‘Birdwatching’ trip down the River Sella. This trip is nothing like a typical leisurely river trip. The departure point is a few kilometres further downstream than that of other companies, offering a unique experience away from the crowds, where you can hear the water and the various birds that inhabit the river. You can bring a camera, which, together with the binoculars provided, allows you to enjoy the experience to the full. In certain places, your belongings are stored in watertight containers carried in the canoe to prevent them from getting wet. Moreinformation (opens in a new tab )
- Ponga Natural Park. This park, which was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 2018, is one of the jewels of Asturias. The activity involves visiting the Beyos Gorge, home to some of the finest deciduous forests in Asturias. You can admire hidden gorges with hamlets where hardly anyone lives, in complete harmony with the natural environment. You can also spot griffon vultures, golden eagles and short-toed eagles. - The birds of the Ría de Villaviciosa. This natural area serves as a resting and feeding ground for waterbirds migrating from northern Europe to warmer climes as winter approaches. It is at this time of year that the greatest variety and number of species can be seen in the estuary, but many species of bird can be spotted throughout the year. Findout more(opens in a new tab)
