The reservoir is situated on the course of the River Barrea, between the municipalities of Ribera de Arriba and Morcín. Although the dam is located in Ribera de Arriba, almost the entire surface area of the reservoir lies within the municipality of Morcín.

The reservoir was built to supply drinking water to the towns in central Asturias, particularly Oviedo/Uviéu.

Surrounded by a landscape of meadows, riverside vegetation and mountains, it offers a peaceful setting of great scenic interest. In the surrounding area, visitors can spot waterbirds and various plant communities associated with wetlands and the riverbed.

On the northern side of the reservoir there is a recreational area and a small viewpoint from which one can see Monsacro, one of the area’s most iconic peaks, on the summit of which stand two medieval chapels. The landscape is complemented by views of the Sierra del Aramo, which frames much of the surrounding area.

As this is a reservoir used for the supply of drinking water, no form of boating is permitted on its waters.

Access is via the N-630 to Santolaya; drive through the village and continue along the MO-1 towards La Roza, then turn off onto the MO-2 towards Los Alfilorios, between Malpica and El Regueru.
