Arbón

The Arbón Reservoir, situated on the course of the River Navia, is the river’s first hydroelectric development and has a shoreline of 36.20 kilometres. Its surroundings, characterised by lush vegetation and native trees, create a particularly attractive landscape for relaxation and enjoying nature.

In addition to its role in generating electricity, the reservoir is an important venue for recreation and sport. Activities such as rowing, sailing and fishing can be enjoyed on its waters, and there are facilities in place to facilitate these pursuits. Motorised boating is not permitted.

One of the main leisure areas associated with the reservoir is the Puente de Castrillón River Recreation Area, situated in a riverside woodland setting next to the water. Furthermore, the vegetation along the reservoir’s banks is of ecological interest.

The dam and the head of the reservoir are situated in the municipality of Villayón, in the parish of Arbón, whilst the tail end of the reservoir extends as far as Meróu, in the municipality of Boal. The dam is situated approximately 12 kilometres from the mouth of the River Navia where it flows into the Cantabrian Sea, and the reservoir has a capacity of 38.20 hm³. The rivers Cabornel and Riofrío also flow into it.

The surrounding area also offers various opportunities to explore the landscape of the Navia Valley. The Navia Viewpoint Route (PR.AS-299) starts from the Castrillón leisure area; this circular route, approximately 11 kilometres long, can be covered on foot or by mountain bike and offers a range of panoramic views of the reservoir and the surrounding valleys.
