Info
Situated in the municipality of Quirós, some six kilometres from Bárzana, the Valdemurio Reservoir lies right on the route of the Senda del Oso Greenway, one of the best-known trails in Asturias. The reservoir is used for hydroelectric power and has a catchment area of around 196 km².
Its location alongside the Senda del Oso makes it a particularly attractive spot for those exploring the area on foot or by bike. The branch of the trail linking Caranga with Bárzana runs alongside the reservoir, offering views over the water and the mountains of the Quirós valley.
Water sports and fishing can be enjoyed on the reservoir, provided that the safety zones established near the dam and the water intakes are always respected. The area also features a jetty and facilities for recreational fishing.
Next to the reservoir is the Valdemurio Recreation Area, which is directly connected to the Senda del Oso trail and designed as a rest area for those exploring this stretch of the valley.
The banks feature riparian vegetation that runs alongside the river’s course and contributes to the natural and scenic character of the area. The reservoir is also situated on the northern boundary of the Somiedo Regional Game Reserve.
Access is via the AS-229 road from Bárzana, and its connection to the Senda del Oso also makes it easy to reach on foot or by bicycle. Valdemurio thus serves as a meeting point between the landscape of the Quirós Valley, outdoor activities and one of Asturias’ most iconic greenways.
