Castropol hosts the Corpus Christi Flower Carpets festival .
The beauty and charm of these carpets lies in the colourfulness of the flowers, the narrowness of the streets and the care of their authors. It is a complex artisan task that requires designing and measuring the motifs, deciding on colours and materials, until a tapestry is created on which the Body of Christ passes under a canopy, accompanied by boys and girls celebrating their First Communion.
This celebration combines ephemeral art, religious fervour and a deep sense of community. From the early hours of the morning, dozens of neighbours, children and adults alike, work shoulder to shoulder to design and hand-make colourful carpets from flowers, seeds, seashells, dyed sawdust and other natural materials. Each creation is unique, and its beauty lies as much in the aesthetic care as in the symbolism and collective effort behind it.
