The festivity of the Disarmament of Oviedo is celebrated every 19 October and has its origins in the First Carlist War (1836), when the troops loyal to the Constitution managed to repel two attempts to take the city. In gratitude, the authorities offered the soldiers an "extraordinary ranch" which would be repeated year after year on the same date.
In 1876, with the definitive end of the war, a great celebration of disarmament and demilitarisation was organised, with popular banquets all over Spain. As it was a day of vigil, the rancho consisted of chickpea stew with cod or haddock, a dish that was forever linked to this commemoration.
At the end of the 19th century, specifically in 1897, Oviedo's innkeepers took on the leading role in the celebration and began to serve the Desarme Menu in their establishments, making it an essential gastronomic event in the city.
