Every 16th July, the town of Cangas del Narcea hosts the famous "Descarga" in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, one of the most popular celebrations in Asturias.
The day begins with a solemn mass in the chapel of El Carmen, followed by the procession of the "Subida", and the "tiradas", or "tiradas", organised by the different "peñas".
The High Mass is celebrated in the Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene, and then the festival begins with parades, fanfares and brass bands.
In the afternoon, the Procession of Carmen takes place, and then when the Virgin reaches the centre of the Roman Bridge, the "Descarga" begins; the sky is flooded with fireworks and gunpowder for several minutes. In a clear tribute from the peñas canguesas to the Virgin and to those who are no longer with us. The feeling is indescribable, you have to participate and experience it, because it is a unique event.

La Magdalena.
