Villaviciosa
Easter Week in Villaviciosa has its roots in the 17th century. In 1668, two Dominican friars from Oviedo established the Brotherhood of the Holy Name of Jesus in Villaviciosa, which, like the one in the capital, had the aim of organising the events and commemorative manifestations of the Passion.
Since then the Brotherhood, the only one in Villaviciosa for Holy Week - which currently has 1800 members - has carried out its tasks with a characteristic that has earned it the respect and contemplation not only of the people of Villaviciosa but of the whole of Asturias and even beyond.
From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, there are seven processions. Mainly on Good Wednesday and Good Friday, thousands of people flock to Villaviciosa to witness the Encounter (Wednesday) and the Descent from the Cross or Desenclavo (Good Friday), which are two veritable autos sacramentales, with a dramatic force worthy of consideration.
