Our Lady of the Rosary in Luarca. Valdés

Luarca/L.luarca hosts the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, patron saint of sailors - it is said that she protected John of Austria and his ships in the battle of Lepanto - which has been celebrated in the town in the middle of summer since time immemorial.

The Virgin is carried out on a platform along the quay, and then climbs onto the boat, which strictly speaking is her turn, and begins to sail out to sea, accompanied by the rest of the decorated boats. During the saleo, the Salve Marinera is sung and a floral offering is made in honour of all those who have died at sea.
