Info
Nestled in the most abrupt and rugged entrails of western Asturias is Pesoz, which like the rest of the surrounding councils enjoys a benevolent microclimate that allows it to be a land of vineyards, which is why it joins the list of municipalities in the west, including Allande, Cangas del Narcea, Degaña, Ibias, Grandas de Salime, Illano and Tineo, which produce the unique high mountain wine of Asturias. Illano and Tineo, which produce the unique high mountain wine found in Asturias. Precisely for this reason, Pesoz has an Ethnological Museum that explains the history of the western Asturian vineyards, and a very popular wine festival.
If we are talking about architecture, in the religious sphere there is the Church of Santiago - of Romanesque origin -, in the capital of the council. Another remarkable jewel is the Palace of Ron (nowadays the Palace of Monteserín) built in stone and slate, characteristic of the area, but the most exotic and original is the village of Argul, unique in all Asturias with an architecture where galleries and tunnels prevail, and where the houses are literally leaning against the rock; It is a unique ensemble, with several chapels, and was the birthplace of the Baroque sculptor Juan Alonso Villabrille y Ron, who worked at the court of Philip V.
On this tour of exotic places we must not miss the village of A Paicega , which in the mid-20th century was built for the workers who worked on the Salime dam, and which has spectacular views over the river Navia.
Between 1948 and 1955, A Paicega was home to some three thousand people, dedicated to receiving the materials needed to build the imposing Salime reservoir dam, which arrived by cable car from El Espín, in Coaña. Once the material was received, the task was enormous: to raise the huge mass of steel and concrete.
The settlement had some houses, garages and barracks where the workers stayed. There were also schools, shops, hairdressers and even places for leisure, such as a small casino and a couple of cinemas. Those who knew it say that its main street was bustling and lively. Of course, there were also places of worship, a clear example being the church, a building that still stands today.
The village, today converted into a nostalgic viewpoint, offers splendid views over the river Navia and its surrounding landscape.
Population: 191 inhabitants.
Surface area: 38.97 km2
