River Navia
- Title Grandas de Salime, Navia, Allande, Coaña, Illano, Boal, Villayón, Ibias, Pesoz Western Asturias
- Extension Extension: 99 Km. km 2
Info
It flows into the Cantabrian Sea, between Cape San Agustín and Penafurada, forming the Navia estuary and covering 158 kilometres.
During its course it sometimes acts as a natural border between Lugo and Asturias. It crosses nineteen municipalities downstream, seven of which are Asturian: Ibias, Grandas de Salime, Allande, Pesoz, Illano, Villayón and Boal. It flows into the estuary that separates Coaña and Navia. As it passes through the Asturian towns of Os Coutos (Ibias), Vistalegre (Boal), Pesoz, Doiras (Boal), Arbón (Villayón), Porto (Coaña) and Navia.
The river drains several areas subject to two protection categories, Natural Monuments (Cascadas de Oneta, in Villayón) and SCI (Sites of Community Interest): Río del Oro (Allande), Alcornocales de Navia (Allande, Illano and Pesoz, Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias (Cangas del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias), Río Navia (Coaña and Navia), Río Ibias (Ibias), Sierra de Los Lagos (Allande and Cangas del Narcea) and the Protected Landscape of Las Sierras de Carondio and Valledor (Allande, Grandas de Salime and Villayón). They include protection for the brown bear, otters, Iberian desman, bats, various invertebrates and amphibians, as well as cork oak and oak groves.
Along its course we find three reservoirs, Arbón, Doiras (the second upstream) which feeds the Doiras and Silvón power stations, and finally Salime.
Its main tributaries in the Principality are the river Ibias, which rises in Puerto de Cerredo and flows through Degaña and San Antolín de Ibias, discharging its waters into the Salime reservoir.
The river Oro (which flows into the Doiras reservoir) and a large part of its course runs through Allande, entering Grandas de Salime in the vicinity of Villarpedre. The river Lloredo flows through Allande and flows into the Arbón reservoir.
Next to the Navia estuary there is also a cellulose factory, colloquially known as Papelera de Navia, despite the fact that it has never produced paper...
