Info
Opened in 1934, the Doiras Reservoir is one of the major hydroelectric schemes on the River Navia. Its dam is situated in the municipality of Boal, whilst the reservoir extends into the municipality of Illano, forming part of one of the most characteristic landscapes of western Asturias.
With a shoreline of 54.6 kilometres, its waters and surroundings offer numerous opportunities for leisure and enjoying nature. Activities such as boating, swimming and fishing can be enjoyed on the reservoir, and there are mooring points for boats at the Puente del Estado and next to the dam.
One of the most appealing ways to explore this area is by boat, which offers a different perspective on the Navia Valley, its hillsides and the landscape surrounding the reservoir.
As well as its recreational use, Doiras plays an important role in hydroelectric power generation and is linked to the Doiras and Silvón power stations. The rivers Agüeria and Urubio also flow into its waters, forming part of the river network in this area.
Nearby is the Barandón Hunting Lodge, which enhances the area’s natural appeal and completes a landscape characterised by water, forests and the valleys of western inland Asturias.
The dam, completed in 1934 and subsequently raised in 1958, forms part of the history of hydroelectric development on the River Navia and remains one of the most iconic features of the Doiras area.
One of the most appealing ways to explore this area is from the water. Boat trips are available on the Doiras Reservoir, allowing you to discover the Navia Valley from a different perspective and enjoy the scenery along its banks.
