Info
The Valle Reservoir forms part of the Somiedo Lake System and is situated within the Somiedo Natural Park, one of the most representative protected natural areas in the Cantabrian Mountains. Situated some 11 kilometres from La Pola Somiedo, it originated as an ancient glacial lake that was later transformed for hydroelectric power generation.
It is the largest glacial lake in Asturias and constitutes one of Somiedo’s most recognisable landscapes. Its vast expanse of water, nestled between mountains and high-altitude pastures, offers a particularly attractive setting for walking and admiring the scenery.
The surrounding area offers a variety of excursions and walking routes, from which visitors can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the lake and the mountains that make up this glacial valley. Furthermore, its inclusion within the Somiedo Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve reinforces the high environmental and scenic value of this area.
Due to the nature of the site and its particular environmental sensitivity, swimming is strongly discouraged.
Access is via a tarmac road from La Pola Somiedo to Valle de Lago. From this village, the route continues towards the reservoir through the valley; walking is one of the best ways to explore the lake and enjoy this protected landscape.
