The Bearded Vulture Mountains

The Bearded Vulture Conservation Foundation is a non-profit organisation that manages the project to reintroduce the bearded vulture in the Picos de Europa, a species classified as endangered in Spain, which disappeared from this area during the 20th century.

It has recently launched an interpretative activity within the Picos de Europa National Park: it is a tour of the area where bearded vultures are released, led by a specialist from the FCQ, with whom participants spend a day conducting monitoring and fieldwork, learning about the species, the techniques used to track the birds, and observing them flying in the wild. The tour includes a stop at the vulture feeding station at the Mirador de la Reina, to learn about the ecology of scavenger species and observe them in action.

This activity takes place every Friday between June and September and lasts approximately four hours.

In addition, the Las Montañas del Quebrantahuesos Centre, situated in the village of Benia, also offers guided tours and other activities. These activities showcase the natural world of the Picos de Europa and the profound interactions between these imposing mountains, the living creatures that inhabit them, and an iconic species such as the bearded vulture, which has now returned to the area after having been driven out by humans.
