Magic Night and Festival of the Esfoyón and Amagüestu in Navelgas. Tineo

Navelgas hosts the Magical Night and the Festival of the Esfoyón and the Amagüestu that recall the old popular traditions so that young people can get to know them and older people can relive them.

This event has been declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Principality of Asturias.

The festival attempts to portray as accurately as possible the esfoyones of yesteryear, in which the villagers would gather in a house to husk (esfoyar) the family's corn and then help them to husk it and hang it from the runners. These gatherings were a social event, where people of all ages would get together to chat, sing, and even the younger ones would take advantage of the occasion to court. The sphoyaza became a celebration where there was no lack of stories, legends, traditions, folixas and songs.

The Esfoyón begins at dusk, at 20:30 h., in the Navelgas de Arriba neighbourhood, which is decked out for the occasion. The streets are covered in straw and lit up with torches. The locals dress up in ancient costumes and the different Cultural Associations are in charge of preparing a variety of food (frisuelos, chestnuts, corn cakes, bollo preñao, freshly skimmed butter).

The youngsters hand out garutsa (homemade cherry anisette and orujo), coffee and freshly made cider, which help to get through the cold November night. The ground floor of the bread bakeries and stables are occupied by local craftsmen who give a small demonstration of their work. Thus, we can find the madreñeiro, the cesteiro, the ferreiro, etc. The music and dances last all night long.
